HARWICH IN BLOOM’
01 July 2008
NEWS FROM HARWICH   LABOUR
                      PRESS RELEASE

£800 TOWARDS ‘HARWICH IN BLOOM’

Following a request from the Harwich Society, Labour’s four Tendring District Councillors for Harwich, Les Double, Lawrie Payne, Garry Calver and Dave Mcleod have made Small Scheme Budget donations of £200 each towards this year’s ‘Harwich in Bloom’.

Under new arrangements, TDC has allocated £2000 to each councillor to assist local projects and the Harwich Society had written to each of the seven TDC councillors for Harwich asking if they would commit £200 to allow ‘Harwich in Bloom’ to enjoy the same level of floral displays as was possible last summer.

The Labour Group immediately agreed and, now that the funds are in place to enable grants to be made, the Leader of the Labour Group, Les Double, has submitted an application form on behalf of the four councillors and has received confirmation that the £800 has been allocated to ‘Harwich In Bloom’.
 Councillor Les Double says
“Harwich in Bloom has become an important part of our local summer scene and Labour councillors are happy to support it. We cannot speak for the three other local councillors but I would hope that all of Harwich’s TDC councillors would support the Harwich Society in making Harwich in Bloom 2008 a success.”

CRP POLITICISE MAYOR MAKING – NOT LABOUR
31 May 2008

CRP POLITICISE MAYOR MAKING

  NOT LABOUR

Our local Labour Town councillors were not prepared to endorse David Rutson as the new mayor of Harwich. Because of this, they gave apologies and did not attend mayor making. Dave Mcleod did attend as it was important that the retiring mayor was present and Labour had no wish to disrupt the mayor making ceremony.

It was the leader of the Community Representatives Party, Steven Henderson, who chose to make a highly political speech praising his own party and attacking Labour. This is, to our knowledge, the first occasion when mayor making has been used in a party political manner. Indeed, his own CRP councillors, Jacky Wares and Pat Burke, publicly criticised him for making a political event out of mayor making.

It should also be remembered that Steven Henderson and David Rutson refused to attend mayor making two years ago because the incoming mayor, John Thurlow, had left the CRP to join the Labour Party. No one at John’s mayor making sought to politicise the day by making reference to their boycott.

Your Labour councillors believe that anyone who aspires to the honour of being mayor of Harwich should promote and support Harwich at all times and should do nothing that might bring the office of the mayor into disrepute. Your local Labour councillors have remained faithful to those beliefs and regret that the Community Representatives Party, by their actions, do not appear to share those beliefs.
CAR PARK DECISIONS
27 April 2008

LABOUR PLEASURE AT

 CAR PARK DECISIONS

Our local Labour councillors are enjoying a double celebration over local car parking charges.

Not only has the 10p for the first hour rate come into effect at the Milton Road car park but the Portfolio Holder responsible for Car Parks, Councillor Harry Sheering, has listened to the lobbying from the Labour Group and has decided against introducing charges at the car park at the end of West End Lane.

Dave Mcleod, who led Labour’s joint campaign with town centre businesses over the Milton Road car park, says

“It is now cheaper to park for an hour in the Milton Road car park than it is to drive around the town trying to find a road side parking space. This will benefit shoppers and businesses alike.”

The reduced rate for the Milton Road car park was one of Labour’s items agreed when Labour entered into the administration and the Labour Group is grateful to Councillor Harry Sheering for his cooperation in securing this much needed boost for Dovercourt Town Centre.

Likewise, the Labour Group has lobbied alongside the Beach Hut Association to prevent the introduction of charges at the West End car park and is very pleased that this campaign has also been successful.

Garry Calver says

“We have been working very closely with Betty Holloway and her colleagues to put forward the case for the West End car park to remain free. Once again, Harry Sheering listened carefully to the points we were making and agreed with us. It is another example of how cooperation within the administration is bringing benefits to our town.”

Squirrels Appeal
14 April 2008
INSPECTOR DISMISSES SQUIRRELS APPEAL

Garry Calver, one of Labour’s Town and District councillors for East Central ward, has welcomed the news that the original planning application to build a four storey block of flats on the site of the former Squirrels sports and social club has been refused on appeal.

Gary Calver opposed the proposal as a Harwich Town Councillor and, since his election to TDC in May 2007, has actively supported the residents of Fronks ave, Fronks road and St Georges ave who will be affected by a development of such a height.

Councillor Garry Calver says

“I have been keeping residents advised of developments and, as ward councillor, I addressed the meeting of TDC’s Development and Control committee and argued against the application. I believe it is wrong to impose a four-storey building adjacent to existing two storey houses. The committee agreed with me and refused the application and now the Planning Inspector has dismissed the appeal for the same reason. It is very good news for local residents.”

A second application is still to be determined and Garry Calver intends to address the committee asking them to refuse this application as well.

“I welcome the fact that the developer has accepted the need to reduce the building to two storeys in height nearest to the road but there is still part of the new proposal that is four storeys in height,” continued Garry Calver. “My views have not changed and residents can be assured that I will be putting forward the same argument against the new proposal as I did against the original application.”

Harwich in Bloom
11 April 2008
LABOUR BACKS HARWICH IN BLOOM The Labour Group of Harwich Tendring District Councillors is pleased to support the request from the Harwich Society for a financial contribution to Harwich in Bloom. The Tednring District Council budget for 2008/09 will, once fully scrutinised, provide each councillor with a £2000 budget to use locally and the Harwich Society has asked the seven TDC councillors representing Harwich and Dovercourt if they would consider allocating £200 each to enable Harwich in Bloom 2008 to enjoy a similar display as was possible in 2007. Leader of the Labour Group, Les Double, says “Harwich in Bloom brightens up our town in the summer months and the Harwich Society do a great job in arranging it. Our four Labour TDC councillors are happy to support Harwich in Bloom 2008 and have pledged £200 each from their personal budgets.” The four Labour councillors, Les Double, Lawrie Payne, Dave Mcleod and Garry Calver hope that the three other local TDC councillors agree to a similar contribution to ensure that Harwich in Bloom receives the level of funding that it requires for 2008. The original project was the idea of Harwich’s Mayor, Dave Mcleod, who started the project with just six hanging baskets. Dave Mcleod says “I am very pleased at how Harwich in Bloom has grown and I hope that everyone who is in a position to assist does so to make Harwich in Bloom 2008 another great success. Well done to the Harwich Society.”
